“Box Office Battle” is The Fly’s weekly roundup of what movies topped the weekend’s box office.
A24’s “Civil War” won this weekend’s box office with a $25.7M debut, making it the biggest opening ever for A24. The dystopian action movie sports a B- CinemaScore, with the audience skewing heavily male â 73%. The debut is also the biggest for an R-rated movie this year.
BOX OFFICE RUNNER-UPS: Warner Bros. (WBD) and Legendary’s “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” placed number two with another $15.5M from 3,847 locations. Behind it was Sony‘s (SONY) “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” with $5.8M in its fourth outing for a domestic total of $96.9M and $160M globally. Comcast (CMCSA) subsidiary Universal’s “Kung Fu Panda 4” placed number four with an estimated $5.5M. Rounding out the top five, Warner Bros.’ “Dune: Part Two” grossed another $4.3M from 2,401 theaters.
